I traveled to three rural villages in southern Uganda to photograph the women who brew a beer beverage, called ajon, the men who drink it, and to understand the economic and cultural importance behind this lucrative business. This is a photograph of Betty Anyait, 34, who has been brewing beer for two decades in the slums of Uganda’s capital, Kampala. She earns $70 a day, on average, which is twice the average Ugandan income.
